Charleston, S.C.Randell C. Stoney, Jr., a member attorney of Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC, has been elected president of the Charleston County Bar Association for 2010. The Bar Association provides a variety of services for its 1,700 members, including access to extensive research and informational tools, continuing education, local legal news and networking opportunities. In addition, the Bar Association provides both legal talent and financial support to Pro Bono Legal Services, an organization providing legal representation to members of the public who cannot afford to pay an attorney. Pro Bono Legal Services offers a broad range of civil legal services, including family law, housing, probate, consumer transactions, employment and public benefits.

Stoney was also elected to the Trident Technical College Foundation 2009-2010 Board of Trustees. The Foundation raises funds to bridge the gap between the needs and resources of Trident students and employees, providing support in the form of scholarships, classroom equipment and materials and other programs. The 60-member Board of Trustees consists of business leaders from throughout the Low Country, including representatives from The Boeing Company, Google, AT&T and Mead Westvaco. Trustees are responsible for fund raising and steering, particularly with an eye to fostering Trident programs that will produce “work-ready” graduates for area employers.

Stoney continues his family’s tradition of practicing law in Charleston started by his grandfather close to 100 years ago. For over 20 years, he has focused his law practice on premises and product liability, construction law and litigation, and general liability. He holds an AV Martindale-Hubbell rating*, representing the highest level of professional excellence, and is listed in both the 2008 and 2009 editions of Super Lawyers as one of the top attorneys in the state of South Carolina.

Stoney, who received his undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston (B.A.) and his J.D. from Campbell University, served both as Assistant Ninth Circuit Solicitor for Charleston County and as Deputy Solicitor for Berkeley County in South Carolina before entering private practice. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the South Carolina Defense Trial Lawyers Association, and the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC). Over the years, he has been actively involved with the American Cancer Society, and he has served on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries, the board of directors Preservation Society of Charleston, as a Commissioner of the Pilotage for the Port of Charleston, and as junior warden of St. John’s Berkeley, where he is currently active. He is a member of the advisory board for the Center for Heirs Property, an organization founded by the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina.
